The Importance of a Professional Online Presence for Actors

A casting director or producer who is considering you for a role will almost certainly look you up online before deciding whether to bring you in. What they find: or fail to find: matters.

Your online presence is your professional calling card, and managing it intentionally is as much a part of your career as attending auditions or developing your craft.

What a professional online presence looks like

At minimum, a working actor should have:

• A casting directory profile: Casting.mt for Malta-based work, Spotlight for UK, Backstage or Actors Access for US
• An up-to-date showreel: hosted on Vimeo or YouTube, linked from every profile
• Professional social media presence: Instagram and LinkedIn at minimum
• Consistent headshots across all platforms: the same current image so you are immediately recognisable

Social media for actors

Instagram is particularly relevant for actors because it is visual and because casting directors and directors do actively browse it. Your Instagram does not need to be exclusively about your acting career: authentic personality is often more interesting than a curated performance portfolio. But it should not actively work against you either.

Consider what impression your public social media creates. Does it show someone professional, interesting, and easy to work with? Or does it raise questions you would rather not answer in an audition room?

Keeping everything current

An out-of-date online presence can be worse than no presence at all. A headshot from five years ago, a showreel that does not work, a casting profile listing credits that ended a decade ago: all of these signal to a professional that you are not actively engaged in your career.

Set a reminder every six months to review and update everything. New headshot when your look changes. New credits as you complete projects. New showreel clips as better footage becomes available.
